If going to the dentist wasn’t painful enough…

Two companies that specialize in dental office software were hit hard by a cyberattack recently, affecting dental offices around the country as a result.

The companies, The Digital Dental Record and PerCSoft, both based in Wisconsin, has previously collaborated on a product called DDS Safe. DDS Safe was designed for storing patient medical records and backing them up as needed.

What’s troubling, or rather, more troubling than the attack itself is that attackers are now targeting managed services providers, rather than end users directly. The attack in Texas we covered recently was perpetrated in a similar fashion. Attackers targeted a common MSP used by all 22 towns and then moved in for the kill once they’d accessed the MSPs systems and in turn, the towns.

We’re intrigued, and a bit concerned, by this developing trend and we’ll continue to watch for other compromised MSPs as they become known to us.
