Everything (we think) we know about the new iPhone 7

August 9, 2016

For the past few weeks, the internet has been buzzing with speculation about the release of Apple’s new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, slated for a September release. With rumors flying everywhere, we’ve done the hard work for all you Apple users waiting with bated breath and rounded up all the information about the new iPhone!

Overall, the latest iPhone is thought to maintain a design similar to the existing iPhone 6S model. One notable change that seems to be all but confirmed is the removal of the headphone jack to promote Lightning and Bluetooth headphones, as well as provide space for a second speaker. This should improve the iPhone speaker system’s volume and quality of sound.

Reports are also claiming the new phone may be either slimmer or waterproof. Those who believe the model will be slimmer than the iPhone 6S, which measures 7.1 millimeters thick, reason it’s possible the phone may be as thin as 6 to 6.5 millimeters thick. Those who think the phone will have waterproof technology are speculating that the screen will employ new technology called “pixel eyes,” which makes it easier to use the screen with wet fingers.

There seem to be three common rumors swirling about in regard to the display on the new iPhones.

  • A sharper screen: Some are saying Apple will make a big jump in resolution to QHD or 4K display, with a move to glass-on-glass screens. Even if that doesn’t happen, at the very least, Apple will most likely upgrade to 1080p sharpness.
  • Edge-to-edge display.
  • No OLED technology until 2017: Reports claim that Apple has communicated to supply chains that it will be switching from LCD to OLED panels… in the next couple of years. Reports also claim that Apple has ordered 100 iPhone 7 plus rumorsmillion AMOLED panels for a 2017 iPhone, making a switch to OLED unlikely for the iPhone 7.

Other new features

The biggest feature change seems to be centered on the camera, with reports claiming the new iPhones will have a dual-camera setup. This will lead to better light and more power, as each sensor would take its own photo and merge them into one, but likely also means the camera bump would be here to stay. Whether the dual camera will appear on the iPhone 7 or be exclusive to the 7 Plus is under debate. Other noted feature changes include:

  • A redesigned home button: Operating similarly to a sensor, the button would be pressure-sensitive and vibrate in response to touch. This could open the door to multi-level functionality, allowing a touch versus physical push-down to enable different actions.
  • New colors: There have been reports that Apple will be offering the new iPhone in a space black that matches the Apple Watch.

Preorders for the new phone are rumored to start Sept. 9, with retail availability following shortly thereafter. (Apple typically sticks to a schedule, and the last few phones have all launched in September). Plus, iOS 10 is due in the fall as well. Who’s planning on upgrading to the new iPhone 7?
