Optimizing your website for local search is almost like regular search engine optimization. You will still need quality content and links to get noticed in your local community. However, for local search engine optimization, you will need a few strategies that are different from the usual SEO.

For local search engine optimization, you will need to start by listing your business in Google places. It is a simple task and free as well. There are thousands of videos on YouTube that you can watch to learn how to list your business in Google places. You can also learn about different tools like tracking of actions, driving directions or direct clicks, clicks for more information on maps as well as impressions. Your aim here is to get ratings and references. In addition, you can also register on other sites such as Yahoo! Local and Bing Local.

After this, verify your business by searching for your brand name along with the city or locality that you are targeting. If you can’t find your business, you will need to take corrective measures for this such as adding a business owner link and so on. When you register, select or assign your business to the listed category that best describes it. Luckily, you can add more than five categories. In addition, try to include as much detail as possible such as address, phone number, Web address, photos, videos, which will increase your exposure. You can also use different tools like JingProject.com to help in this regard.

Next, you should get listed in your local directories. Try to get citations from local business directories like Yelp and Merchant Circle. There are many more directories like this such as Brownbook.net, Citysearch.com, Angieslist.com, judysbook.com, Kudzu.com, etc. In addition, you should try to get some customer reviews. Ask your clients for reviews in email or call them to share their experiences with you. But don’t spam their mail boxes. That will have an adverse impact on your business.

With all of these tips, you should have no problem tapping into your local market.
