One of the things MyITpros prides itself on is having a strong culture of teamwork- and that is made possible by our phenomenal staff. Each month, we’re spotlighting one of our awesome team members so you can know the faces behind the brand. This month, we are pleased to sit down and talk to one of our newest Systems Administrators – Cory Brown!
How did you discover you wanted a career in IT?
“Believe it or not, I first got into technology when I got a Super Nintendo as a kid! I ended up setting it up myself and from there I started helping family and neighbors set up a printers or modems. They would just ask me to help them install stuff and I’d say sure, why not! When I went to college I was big into design, but I realized that art was not as stable a career as I wanted and I knew I wanted to still be part of the software side of things so I went into computer systems information technology.”
What was your first IT job?
“My first IT job was with a company called ISON as a helpdesk worker. I started as an intern and then ended up staying on fulltime after graduation for almost 5 years before coming to MyITpros.”
Describe a fulfilling project you’ve worked on.
“I had a tile and flooring company client who literally had no security in place- they were just directly connected to their cable modems and so they were extremely vulnerable to viruses, anything malicious and they had all their passwords as the factory defaults. For a company- it’s extremely dangerous. I was the account manager, so I assessed the network, wrote up a proposal and quote and presented our suggestions to the client. I was able to get this company on board with all my recommendations. We were able set up antivirus measures and firewalls to protect both offices. This also allowed for other features and availabilities that they didn’t have before as well, so we made their overall communications better between offices and users. But most importantly, IT’S SECURE! Seeing how thankful the client was to have us and to learn things they needed that they didn’t have, well, was a great feeling to make a real difference in their company.”
What is the most important thing you’ve learned after 5 years in IT?
“Technology is ever changing and you have to stay up to date. If you don’t have an eye on what’s trending you, or your business, will be left behind. As an IT professional, I strive to keep my certifications up to date, read articles, monitor major tech conferences and generally keep track of the news.”
What are your future goals?
“My big one is to become MCSE certified (Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert). I have two more exams to take. Long term, I’d love to work with MyITpros to become a team lead and be able to help lead the service team and leverage my experience to help people with issues and things they haven’t seen before.”
