Windows XP Support

We recently learned about a 17 person company who has decided to stick it out with Windows XP and forget about upgrading to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Veripic, a software company who provides digital imaging services to law enforcement agencies and the United States military has Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers on their network for various tasks, especially for testing. However, those mission critical systems in operation today will remain on Windows XP, even after Microsoft announced the end of support for Windows XP in April 2014.

According to industry pundits, Windows XP continues to be in operation on 2 out of 5 business systems. According to Veripic CEO John Kwan, in an interview with Kevin Casey for InformationWeek, many of their customers are still on Windows XP and Kwan states their software continues to run faster on Windows XP versus other versions of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Veripic is used to long-term planning. The organization has stockpiled years of supplies for their standardized printer platform the Konica Minolta Magicolor 2200. This has been allowing the organization to acquire printer parts and toner at a significant discount for buying in bulk.

Many organizations continue to have driver issues with legacy applications and services who are still not ready for Windows 7. For them the switch away from Windows XP does not make any sense at this time.  Companies are making contingency plans to purchase refurbished Windows XP machines versus new computer systems from vendors who are no longer selling Windows XP.

For some businesses, the cost justification to roll out Windows 7 or Windows 8 doesn’t make economical sense. Business leaders are electing to deal with the support issues and, according to those interviewed in Casey’s article, rarely require support from Microsoft for their desktop operating systems.

What are your plans for Windows XP? Are you going to keep your existing Windows XP systems or are you going to make the move to Windows 7 or Windows 8? If you need help figuring out if an upgrade is required or need support for your Windows XP systems, give us a call today and we can help you.
